Hobbie Auto Center has a great history that goes all the way back to 1934, when Don Hobbie, Grandfather of the dealer today, purchased a 50% interest in the then named Johnson Chevrolet Company. After doing business as Johnson and Hobbie Chevrolet for three years, Don Hobbie purchased the remaining interest from Mr. Johnson.
After Surviving WW2 by selling used vehicles at the Montgomery Street lot Don Hobbie moved the store to a new location on Bird Street and purchased Cadillac in 1948. At the same time the name was changed to Don Hobbie Chevrolet/Cadillac, which Don Hobbie ran until his death in 1955. Survived by his two sons, Gordon and Dick Hobbie, they took over active management of the business and operated as partners until 1980 when Gordon Hobbie purchased Dick Hobbies interest in the business.
In 1964, the dealership was incorporated and the name changed to Hobbie Chevrolet-Cadillac and relocated to its present location at 1250 Oro Dam Blvd. As luck would have it Gordon Hobbie was able to purchase a Toyota Franchise in 1981 and again the business name was changed to Hobbie Chevrolet-Cadillac-Toyota.
In 1986 Gordon Hobbie sold his interest in the business to his son, Tres Hobbie, who at that time became one of the few third generation dealers on record. During the 1990's Tres upgraded and remolded the store to make it the most modern automotive facility in Oroville.
